2019-05-17 Ajou University held the 10th University Ranking Forum of Korea to explore ways to raise university competitiveness. The Forum was held on May 17th under the theme "University Rankings and the Competitiveness of Universities," with Ajou University President Hyung Ju Park, Chairman Young Suk Chi from Elsevier Korea, Tae Wan Kim from QS Korea, and officials from other universities in attendance. In his greetings, President Park said, "Today, you need more than expertise in a certain field," adding, "Education on basic knowledge has become more important at universities, and students should develop interdisciplinary connecting minds based on this education."He went on to say, "I believe trying something firsthand is more effective than repeatedly observing how others do it," adding, "Ajou University is fostering talents with more than expertise in their own fields."In his keynote speech, Elsevier Korea Chairman Chi used baseball as an example, saying "Baseball is a sport that extensively uses data in recruiting and replacing players, which makes it a Big Data-driven business," adding, "This suggests that universities should study how to utilize data as necessary."He further emphasized, "The criteria for university evaluation will change in the next five years and the 'substantial influence' that a university has on society in accomplishing sustainable goals will become important." He then explained that universities should set long-term directions instead of focusing on short-term results like university rankings and decide on their own areas of specialization."Tae Wan Kim (QS Korea), Chang Dana (Elsevier and URFK), Yoon Hee Kang (Clarivate Analytics), Alexandros Papaspyridis (MS Singapore Office), Vice President for Planning Soon Keon Nam (Kyung Hee University), and Head of the Office of Global Affairs Byong Kwon Kim (Youngsan University) also gave presentations for different sessions during the event.

On February 22nd, Ajou University signed an MOU with KNX Association and KNX Korea to standardize both smart infrastructure control technology and related R&D and foster talents in the field. KNX, which is the only international standard and open protocol for smart building control, enables building control solutions to interact with one another regardless of their manufacturer and nationality. KNX Association provides support for KNX and is carrying out technical cooperation with about 40,000 companies in 128 countries, National Groups in 110 member countries, and about 100 technical colleges around the world. The MOU signing ceremony was attended by Vice President for Industry-Academia Cooperation Seong Keun Oh from Ajou University, President Yoon Hee Lee from KNX Korea, and Christophe Parthoens from KNX Association. The three parties agreed to seek technical exchanges and joint projects, develop applied technologies and further international cooperation relating to KNX by joining Scientific Partner, and foster talents with global competitiveness by establishing the KNX Training Center in Korea with experts certified by KNX Association. The three institutions are planning to begin their partnership with a project that utilizes technical collaboration results for KNX-based smart lighting. Then, they will develop necessary control solutions for modern buildings for commercial and residential uses, including smart home, smart building, and smart city. Vice President Oh said, "This MOU will help us foster qualified talents," adding, "We will try not only to create jobs in Korea, but pursue technical exchanges and networking with foreign companies." Earlier, the University produced eight graduates of the KNX Tutor Course. KNX tutors, who will be in charge of education at the KNX Training Center, are experts who have obtained international accreditation after completing KNX Association's relevant courses and assessment.

The reunification of Germany and the prospects for a unified Korea were discussed at a talk show held at Ajou University. Ajou Institute of Unification (AIU) invited Suwon City Mayor Tae Young Yeom and German Ambassador to the Republic of Korea Stephan Auer to 'Ajou Unification Talk.' The event, which was held on January 24th and presided over by AIU Director Jung Hun Cho, proposed ideas on inter-Korean cooperation in preparation for the possible reunification of the Korean Peninsula. Mayor Yeom said, "There should be more decentralization of power to local governments to prepare for reunification," adding, "Projects that are carried out by local governments can have more ripple effects on the citizens." He went on to say, "I would like to seek sister relationships with North Korean cities with similar status," adding, "Such exchanges will help address challenges that we will face after the two Koreas are unified." Ambassador Stephan Auer stated, "Over ten years before Germany was reunified, 23 million phone calls were made and 4 million meetings were held between East and West Germany. Local governments played major roles in the exchanges," adding, "Above all, it is important for North and South Koreans to experience the culture of the other side." He also mentioned, "However, you should take flexible approaches because the situations in Germany at the time were completely different from those on the Korean Peninsula today."

Ajou University Professor Chang Hee Suh (School of Medicine) discovered the cause of lupus, an intractable disease. Lupus is a disease in which immune cells attack normal cells due to an immune system abnormality, causing inflammation in other tissues of the human body. A team led by Professor Suh of the Rheumatology Clinic found that the genetic mutation of Ets1 influences the occurrence of lupus. The findings, which are based on joint research with researchers from the Academy of Immunology and Microbiology under the Institute for Basic Science and POSTECH, were published in The Immunity, a renowned academic journal in immunology. Lupus, which involves butterfly-shaped flushing, causes inflammation of the skin, kidney, and joints, etc., and can even be fatal. It is known to occur in about 1 in 1,000 people. While over 60 genetic mutations have been linked to the disease, it was not known which gene directly influences its occurrence. The research team focused on a gene known as 'Ets1' that is most commonly found in Asian lupus patients and discovered that its mutation induces the disease and a certain T cell is a fundamental factor. The team confirmed that Ets1 protein appeared less in the T cells of Korean lupus patients' blood and Ets1's mutation was closely related with the severity of the disease. Researchers explained that a new tissue named 'Tfh2' was found to be significant because it heavily affected immune cells related to worsening clinical symptoms of patients as confirmed in animal testing. Professor Suh said, "The findings were achieved through collaboration between immunologists and clinical doctors," adding, "Animal test results were meaningful in that they helped to identify similar pathological phenomenon in patients, and I look forward to follow-up research to develop new medicines based on the findings."
