Ajou's Hyeong Cheol Park wins Excellence Award at the Korea White Hat Contest

Ajou University's Hyeong Cheol Park (Department of Cyber Security) won the Excellence Award in the Adult Division of the Hacking Defense Competition at the 2015 Korea White Hat Contest, which was co-hosted by the Ministry of Defense and the National Intelligence Service on October 26th at the K Hotel in Yangjae-dong, Seoul.


The Contest, which marked its third year this year, is designed to discover and foster young talents in cyber security in a move to protect against cyber security threats. This year, various other events were held, including lectures by invited experts, meetings with hackers, and the cyber quiz contest, in addition to the Hacking Defense Competition.


“White hats” refer to those who try to hack into information systems for the purpose of public interest and research, etc. or those who create strategies to deal with hacking. It is a synonym for white hackers.
 

A total of 1,300 people from 464 teams participated in this year's Hacking Defense Competition. The preliminary round was held on October 10th, and 16 teams advanced to the final round that was held on October 21st. Participants were asked to resolve issues in a simulated cyber warfare situation, and the evaluation focused on how individual teams defended the servers assigned to them in an accurate and speedy manner when attacked by the organizers. The Competition was divided into the Teen and Adult Divisions, and the winners of the Adult Division are as follows:

▲Grand Prize: Team Amolang [Jong Hwan Kim, Min Jun Park, and Dae Hee Jang from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), and Do Won Jung from UpRoot]

▲First Prize: Team Glass Beads (In Gap Jung from Konkuk University, Jin Hyeon Kim from AhnLab, Jong Seok Hyeon from Samsung SDSAP, and Hyeop Jung from SK Telecom)

▲Excellence Award: Team Yunha Fan Club (Hyeong Cheol Park from Ajou's Department of Cyber Security, Byeong Jin Park from Pohang University of Science and Technology, Hae Song Park from KAIST, and Dae Geun Lee from Seoul National University)
