Science Research Center, “Genomics Instability Control Research Center” Opened
Science Research Center, “Genomics Instability Control Research Center Opened The opening ceremony for the 2011 Science Research Center (SRC) was held in the main auditorium of Ajou University on Nov. 22 and was attended by Jae-Hwan Ahn, president of Ajou University; Sung-Hyun Park, director-general of the National Research Foundation of Korea; Gi-Su Yeon, director of Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, etc. The Genomic Instability Control Research Center at Ajou University was designated as an SRC in Sept. 2011, despite the high competition ratio of 9:1, under the Scientific Research Center (SRC) Program led by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. The Genomic Instability Control Research Center (Head of the Research Center: Prof. Hye-Sung Choi, Biochemistry Class in the Medical School and Molecular Science and Technology Department of the Graduate School) will be receiving national research funds worth around 9 bil won, over the next seven years, to study ways to maintain genomic stability and identify the causes of diseases associated with genomic instability, such as cancer and degenerative diseases. Furthermore, it will also focus on developing new medicines for these diseases. President Ahn said in his welcoming speech, “The excellent research capability of Ajou University has been demonstrated by the fact that it has been supported by various large-scale research projects, including three BK21 projects, the Medical Research Center for Chronic Inflammatory Disease, TOD-based Sustainable City/Transportation ERC, etc.” he added, “I’ll make my utmost efforts to support the Genomic Instability Control Research Center to develop it into a leading research center in the field.
