Dr. Bun-Yeol Lee, a professor of the Department of Molecular Science and Technology at Ajou University has been selected to be one of first recipients of the Carbon Culture Academy Award.

On December 10, 2012, the Korean Chemical Society (led by Deok-Hwan Lee) announced that Dr. Bun-Yeol Lee, Dr. Kwan-soo Kim, a Professor of Chemistry at Yonsei Univesity, and Dr. Sang-Kyu Kim, a Professor of Chemistry at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) would receive the Carbon Culture Academy Award, which was created this year. Dr. Yi-Mun Park, an honorary professor at Simmons College is to be awarded the grand prize. The award ceremony will be held at 4pm on December 17, 2012, at Seoul’s Westin Chosun Hotel.

The Korean Chemical Society said that it decided to award Dr. Lee for “his outstanding academic achievement in developing a metal catalyst that can synthesize polymer efficiently when utilizing carbon dioxide. He made major contributions to improving negative images of carbon through his success in reducing carbon dioxide with the carbon dioxide polymer synthesized using the developed catalyst.”

The Carbon Culture Award was created out of an awareness that work on carbon, which has been the very basis of modern science and technology, has not been acknowledged properly for its contribution and value. The grand prize is awarded to an individual in the field of humanities and social sciences who is devoted to raising social awareness of modern science.
