Leave of absence

Students may take a leave of absence from school for personal or other reasons.

  • Students can apply for a leave of absence from one or two consecutive semesters at once.
  • Students can take a leave of absence from up to eight semesters in total.
  • Semesters from which students are absent due to military enlistment, sickness, pregnancy and parenting, or entrepreneurship are not included in the total number of semesters that students may take off as a leave of absence.
  • Students enrolled in Military Digital Convergence may not take a leave of absence for more than one year in total.
  • Only students who have completed at least one semester after admission (or re-admission/transfer) may apply for a leave of absence (except in cases of military enlistment and sickness).
  • Transfer and re-admitted students may not take a leave of absence that is longer than the duration of the time they have spent at the University since their transfer or re-admission.
  • Once the application for the leave of absence is approved, the student’s semester registration will be automatically revoked.

Termination of Leave of Absence

Students may rescind their decision to take a leave of absence and continue their enrollment in the given semester.

  • Terminating general/entrepreneurial leave: before or at the end of the course schedule revision period for the given semester
  • Terminating military/sick leave: before or on the final day of the first quarter of the given semester

Students who have taken a military leave of absence and want to terminate their leave for reasons other than the normal discharge from military duty must submit documentary evidence of their reason within one week and terminate their leave. Tuition Refund Schedule Students who paid tuition fees before applying to take a leave of absence can have the balance applied to the tuition payment for the semester in which they return to school.

For students on scholarships, only the tuition fees they have actually paid and not the scholarships they have received will be reimbursed.

Returning to school

Students can return to school by following a certain procedure upon the end of their leave of absence.

  • Failure to apply for an extension for their leave of absence or to apply to return to school before the end of their leave of absence may result in students’ expulsion from school.
  • Returning students can file advance application for course registration only by finishing their application to return before the end of the first round of the return application process.
  • Students subject to Ajou University’s engineering education accreditation should consult their departments regarding the accreditation process after their application to return to school is approved.
Return Procedure

Students who intend to return to, or withdraw from, the University are to submit their Request for Return (or Withdrawal) to the Office of International Affairs (Tel. +82-31-219-2925).
