BK21사업단으로 선정되어 지난 7년간 NT를 중심으로 BT를 포함한 융합연구 및 교육활동을 해온 대학원 분자과학기술학과가 7회에 걸친 국제세미나를 통해 나노-메디슨(Nano-Medicine)분야의 융합연구로의 확대를 모색하고 있다.
25일부터 시작된 이번 국제세미나에는 지난 7년간 분자과학기술학과와 공동연구를 해온 미국 노스웨스턴대학 MRC센터(Material Research Center) 소장인 Torkelson 교수를 비롯하여 제 2단계 BK21 분자과학기술학과의 국제협력기관으로 참여하는 조지아공대, 동경대 등 7명의 교수가 초청된다.
이번 세미나를 기획한 김재호(분자과학기술학과) 교수는 “NT와 IT분야의 융합연구가 중점적으로 이루어졌던 BK1차 사업을 정리하고 내년에 새로이 시작될 BK21 2차 사업단을 준비하기 위해 마련된 자리”라며, “아주대는 2차 사업부터는 의학분야까지 범위를 확대해 나갈 계획으로 의과대학과 의견조율을 마친 상태”라고 밝혔다. 이에 따라 이번 세미나에는 나노분야에서는 MIT와 자웅을 겨룰 만큼 세계적으로 인정받는 연구소인 미국 노스웨스턴대학 MRC센터 교수진과 에머리의과대학과 생명공학을 공동연구하고 있는 조지아공대 교수진, 동경대공대와 의대 교수진 등이 참석하여 깊이 있는 세미나가 이루어질 전망이다. 또한 세미나일정 중 그간 분자과학기술학과에서 출원된 특허를 소개하는 ‘아주대 분자과학기술학과 특허 Fair’도 진행될 예정이다.
한편 BK21사업단장 이석현 교수는 “사업단 초기 1년에 분자과학기술학과 교수 1인당 평균 논문 1.5편이었던 것이 7년이 지난 지금 1인당 평균 4편으로 증가했으며, 대학원 분자기술학과에서 박사학위를 받은 많은 학생들이 타 대학에서 교수와 연구원으로 실력을 인정받고 있다”며 연구와 교육 두 가지 면에서 훌륭한 성과를 얻었다고 자평하면서 “2차 사업단으로 선정되면 1차 사업의 나노기술연구 성과를 이용한 인공장기, 초미세 진단장치, 유전자 치료제등에 대한 연구가 이루어질 것”이라고 말했다.
