A research team led by Professor Kim Jong-hyun of our universityl's Department of Applied Chemistry will participate in the "Project to Establish a Hub for Cooperation with Excellent Overseas Research Institutions" organized by the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Research Foundation. This project is in progress to secure and advance basic source technologies through long-term joint research with excellent overseas institutions. Professor Kim Jong-hyun (Department of Applied Chemistry, Graduate School of Molecular Science and Technology) announced that he will conduct joint research with Australian universities and companies under the theme of "Development of AI Platform for Development of Next-Generation High-Performance Hybrid Semiconductor Materials." University of New South Wales (UNSW), Macquarie University, and PV Lighthouse, a software company in the photovoltaic field will participate together. Ajou University will be the lead research institute, and research teams from Hanyang University and Chung-Ang University will also participate. A total of 2.7 billion won will be supported for five years, and Australian participating organizations will match about 6 billion won. Through this project, the joint research team aims to develop a "hybrid semiconductor AI platform." This platform is expected to significantly reduce the cost and time required to develop new semiconductor materials and devices, as it can predict not only the composition of materials suitable for the application of photoelectric semiconductor devices but also the structure and physical properties of devices.The Korean research team will focus on developing hybrid semiconductor materials and devices and collecting high-reliability data from them, while the Australian research team will develop AI platforms and conduct empirical research using the collected data. PV Lighthouse, which participates in this study, is the world's first company to succeed in mass production of simulation programs in the field of photoelectric semiconductor devices, and provides the joint research team with the right to use the developed program.Professor Kim Jong-hyun, who is in charge of the project's general research, said, "We have been conducting joint research on next-generation hybrid semiconductor materials with various Australian institutions for the past seven years. We plan to conduct this research project based on the prior technologies secured through this research." The University of Michigan training program involving students from our university's AI Mobility Engineering Department has been completed. For 10 days, 19 students had the opportunity to expand their knowledge.19 students from the AI Mobility Engineering Department and two advisory professors participated in the "Global Mobility Specialized Education Overseas Short-Term Training" held in July. The education was conducted at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan.Students attended several seminars on the University of Michigan campus and had time to take a look at related facilities and laboratories. On-site visits to mobility-related companies (IPG Automotive USA) were also conducted.Researchers from the University of Michigan and Ajou University and experts from related companies came out as speakers of the seminar. Necessity and Elements of Simulation for Self-Driving Verification, Measurement of the Stability of Self-Driving Mobility, Overview of Self-Driving Technology, Introduction of Aerospace Engineering, Introduction of Self-Driving Code, etc. were held.Also, students had a chance to visit The University of Michigan's proud mobility test site, "M-city," and had a Q&A session with local researchers.Ajou University has implemented an overseas training program at the University of Michigan so that AI mobility engineering students can broaden their perspectives through global experiences. Our school held the 2nd ‘Ajou Biology Seminar’. It is a place to invite promising overseas researchers in the field of advanced bio to share the latest research trends and achievements.The seminar, which was held at Ajou University's Hyegang Hall on the 5th, was attended by researchers from related fields, including Choi Ki-joo, president of Ajou University. Kim Jae-ho, head of the Ajou Brain Promotion Project, Kim Yong-sung, dean of the Advanced Bio Convergence College, and Kim Chul-ho, head of the Advanced Medical Research Institute at Ajou University Medical Center.Professor Kim Deok-ho, director of the Hopkins Center for Microphysiological Systems at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, was invited as a lecturer at the 2nd Ajou Bio Seminar (Ajou Innovations, ABS. ai). Professor Kim is a world-renowned expert in the field of biomimetic systems and also serves as the president of the Korean-American Institute of Technology.In this lecture, Professor Kim Deok-ho introduced the research results of advanced bio fields that have been devoted for the past 25 years, including disease modeling, new drug development, and space bio research using biochip-based microbiological systems (MPS).In particular, Professor Kim focused on cardiac tissue simulation technology using MPS, disease modeling, and drug development cases. In addition, he introduced a heart organoid made of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) to MPS and a study on the impact of space environment on human body at the International Space Station (ISS) with NASA. After the lecture, questions and discussions continued."This seminar served as an opportunity to catch up international-level research trends and strengthen global research cooperation between domestic and foreign researchers," said Kim Yong-sung, dean of Ajou University's Advanced Bio Convergence College. Ajou University's Graduate School of International Studies(GSIS)' "2024 Summer Commencement " was held in the auditorium of Yulgok Hall on the 19th.The Graduate School of International Studies has produced 51 graduates from four departments including the Department of International Management. The "2024 Ajou International Summer School" has been completed with 50 and more students from 10 countries. Students from Uzbekistan's Ajou University in Tashkent (AUT) also participated. The completion ceremony of the International Summer School was held at the Yulgok Hall Innovation Lounge on the 24th. "Ajou International Summer School" is a program that short-term exchange students who visit our school for summer vacation participate in Korean language education and Korean cultural experiences.The four-week long program, which was held from July 2 to July 24, attracted 52 foreign students from 10 countries in the United States, Germany, Poland, Austria, Czech Republic, Uzbekistan, France, Indonesia, Japan, and Thailand. Among the participants, 30 students are from Uzbekistan's Ajou University in Tashkent (AUT).The completion ceremony was attended by 52 graduates, Kim Kyung-rae, Vice-Chancellor of the Office of Academic Affairs, Lee Seok-won, Director of the Office of International Affairs, and AISS Buddy. AISS Buddy is a support group made up of Ajou University students, and 13 undergraduate students supported AISS program along. Ajou International Summer School (AISS) started as a short-term exchange program in 2000 and operated 17 times until 2016, with a total of 1,000 foreign students participated. The program was suspended for the next three years and then resumed in 2020 when the international winter school was implemented through online in the COVID-19 era.Students who participated in this summer school stayed at Ajou University and took Sustainability Data Analysis and Business Decision-Making Macroeconomics Development Korean Language. Students who complete this course will get six credits.In addition, participants experienced various activities such as making Korean traditional food, Korean royal refreshments, K-pop dance classes, and calligraphy classes. They also visited domestic companies and various tourist spots such as the Samsung Innovation Museum, Suwon Hwaseong Haenggung Palace, Suwon World Cup Stadium, and Taean Manripo Beach to broaden understanding of Korean culture. Vice-President Kim Kyung-rae said in a congratulatory speech, "I am grateful that various students from various countries gathered and got along well in an unfamiliar environment," adding, "I believe they have grown a lot through this program, and I hope the memories made in Ajou will last a lifetime." Our school's mathematics department conducted "2024 AJOU-KYUSHU SUMMER SCHOOL ON APPLIED MATHEMATICS," a short-term training course linked to industry-academic cooperation with Kyushu University in Japan.The program is consisted of three days of online education from July 2nd to 4th and five days of education and projects at Kyushu University from July 8th to 12th. Total 25 students majoring in mathematics from the two universities participated, and 12 students from our school participated.The training was led by Osamu Saeki, the professor of the Kyushu University Institute of Mathematics for Industry (IMI) and Professor Park Bo-ram, head of our school's mathematics department. And Professor Pierluigi Chesana, Nguyen Dinh Hoa of Kyushu University and Professor, Shin Dong-wook of the mathematics department of Ajou University were in charge of teaching and project guidance. The "Ajou Bespoke College (ABC) program" held by Ajou University for the first time has been successfully completed. This program is a short-term exchange student program for students from overseas universities and is designed to experience not only Korean culture and history, but also Korean companies and industrial sites. The program lasted for two weeks from June 25 to July 9. Twelve students from Ajou University and fourteen students from the University of Nevada Purdue University, University of Wisconsin, University of Southern California, University of Nevada, Las Vegas participated in the program. Students took special lectures on Korean culture and history, visited corporate sites, and enjoyed opportunities to experience Korean culture. Also ABC program conducted a social problem-solving capstone project, and students who complete this course receive 3 credits.The special lecture was held under the theme of Understanding Korean Industry (Professor Yoon Cheon-seok_Global Management), K-culture Lecture (Professor Park Jae-yeon_Culture & Contents), Understanding Korean History (Professor Han Sang-woo_History), Understanding Entrepreneurship (Professor Kim Kyung-ho Management).Students visited Naver, Samsung Electronics-Samsung Innovation Museum, Gyeonggi Provincial Government, CJ Blossom Park, Samsung Biologics Dentium. They visited National Museum of Korea, Gyeongbok Palace, Hwaseong Haenggung Palace for a tour of Korean culture and history. Meanwhile, on the July 4th, a meeting was held with President Choi Ki-joo, participating students and professors. The event, held at the Yulgok Hall Innovation Lounge, was attended by 26 participating students, President Choi Ki-joo, Director of International Cooperation Lee Seok-won, faculty members who were in charge of special lectures, and Professor So Jae-hyun of the Department of Transportation System Engineering who was in charge of guiding the Capstone project. Students presented the results of the Capstone project they studied and prepared during the training period, including Solving public transportation problems in Korea and the United States Developing apps to reduce illiteracy rates and increase ease of use in the digital age Starting a company that provides personalized health plans and services through nutrition market analysis in Korea and the United States.Nana Ko (University of Wisconsin-Madison) student who participated in the program said, "The visit to the Samsung Innovation Museum during this program was memorable," adding, "It was interesting because there were many interactive elements, and it was good to learn not only the history of Samsung but also the history of Korea.""It was good to have a variety of experiences with students of different cultures and nationalities through the ABC program," said Park Jun-young (management) student. "It was a meaningful opportunity to approach from different perspectives and talk on various topics." A special lecture by British Ambassador, Colin James Crookes was held in the auditorium of the Yeonam Hall on the afternoon of the June 13th. This lecture is the last lecture of the ‘Ajou Lecture’ in the first semester of 2024, and was held under the theme of "Britain and the Korean Peninsula" with more than 300 students from ‘Ajou Lecture’ and general students participating.Colin Crooks was appointed as the British Ambassador to Korea in 2022, and prior to this, he served as an ambassador in North Korea for three years from 2018. He also worked at the Korean embassy from 1995 to 1999. He has a reputation as a representative expert on the Korean Peninsula because of his experience working as ambassadors in both South and North Korea. He studied Korean in the 1990s, Korea, so he has a full command of Korean. As well as this day, the lecture was conducted in Korean without interpretation.Ambassador Crooks started his lecture by showing the daily lives of North Koreans with photos taken in North Korea. Hong Kyung Soo, a professor in Ajou University’s Department of Culture and Contents, has published a book entitled How is K-content is Made?.In his book, Professor Hong analyzes TV shows in three genres—drama, culture, and entertainment—that have become representative of Korean popular culture in the last two years or so. His interviews of five TV show producers formed the basis of his writing.The TV shows analyzed in the three categories were Extraordinary Attorney Woo (drama), Story of the Day When You Bite Your Tail (culture), and Physical: 100, You Quiz on the Block, and Street Woman Fighter (entertainment).A seasoned content critic, Professor Hong believes the secrets to creation of popular Korean content (K-content) can be understood by analyzing the thoughts, sentiments, and intentions of the people involved in its making. He regularly conducts interviews with the producers of content that catches his attention. In his book Professor Hong sees the aforementioned five titles as a refreshing departure from predecessors in their genres. He explains that AI and streaming services expand the boundaries of what is possible. Through his in-depth interviews of these producers, Professor Hong identified a concrete philosophy of production among them and gained an understanding that the potential and actual worldwide popularity of the shows have resulted from the effort and resources invested in their making.How is K-content is Made?, with its unedited excerpts from the interviews, can serve as a foundation for researchers of content and pop culture, and provide media workers and students with insights into content planning. From 1995 to 2010 Professor Hong was a producer with KBS, with Discovery of Recite and Danbak Interview among his produced titles. Since 2010 he has focused on research and education in content production. He has authored the books Squid Game and the Content Revolution, I Decided to be a Strong Content Planner from Now on, A Conversation with an Entertainment Producer, and A Conversation with an Expanding Producer. He is chief of broadcasting and new media research with the Korean Society for Journalism and Communication Studies, and a member of the MBC Journalism Accountability Committee.

On February 15th, the graduation ceremony of the first batch of students to earn a dual degree from Ajou University and the Graduate School of Business and Entrepreneurship (GSBE) in Uzbekistan took place. Present at the ceremony were the Uzbek graduates and officials from the Embassy of Uzbekistan in Korea, and members of Ajou University, including President Choi Kee-choo and Dean Chang Byeong-Yun of the Graduate School of International Studies. The graduation ceremony opened with an address by President Choi Kee-choo, followed by addresses by Dean Chang Byeong-Yun and Ambassador of Uzbekistan to Korea Fakhriddin Nabiev, and the conferment of degrees and awards, and ended with a presentation by the student president. Ajou University entered into a partnership on operation of a dual degree program with the GSBE, an education institution operating under the Uzbek Ministry of Economy and Finance, in 2022. The Uzbek Ministry of Economy and Finance was the catalyst for the partnership when it requested collaboration in developing Uzbek IT business experts. Uzbek students who undertake the dual degree program are selected each year by the GSBE, where they complete Semester 1 and 2 of the program, followed by Semester 3 and 4 at the Graduate School of International Studies at Ajou University. The program runs for 18 months, during which the students study at the Graduate School of International Studies at Ajou University for majors in global business and IT business. Graduates of the program are awarded a dual degree from Ajou University and the GSBE. The first group of graduates was made up of Uzbek public and private sector employees, in fields such as IT, HR, and marketing. Twenty students completed the inaugural dual degree program. President Choi extended congratulations to the graduates, saying “The first graduation from the dual degree program of Ajou University and the GSBE is meaningful.”He urged the graduates to “trust themselves and dream big.”Dean Chang Byeong-Yun said, “The Graduate School of International Studies at Ajou University is where change begins,” adding that he hoped “you graduates will take your learning wherever you go to initiate and lead change.” Ajou University founded Ajou University in Tashkent (AUT) in Uzbekistan in February 2021, and provides the new school with curricula and expertise. At present, the Ajou University undergraduate programs available at AUT are in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Civil Systems Engineering, and Architecture. Graduates of these programs are awarded a degree from Ajou University. The undergraduate programs offered by AUT itself are in Korean Philology and Management, English Philology and Management, and IT-Business. A project jointly executed by students of Ajou University and Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University for the development of a barista robot has been successfully completed.A presentation on the achievements of the barista robot project was held at Nanyang Technological University from January 16 to 20. The presentation brought together students from Ajou University and Nanyang Technological University who completed the joint project, which had been conducted online since September last year.The international industry-academia-research project was conceived by an Ajou University professor of mechanical engineering in Semester 2 last year who thought it would be a valuable learning experience for the participating students. Six Ajou University students and five mechanical and aerospace engineering students from Nanyang Technological University formed the project team in September of last year, with the objective of designing an AI robot that uses computer vision technology to make hand drip coffee. The six Ajou University students who participated in the project were Im So-yeon (digital media), Park Yong-joon (industrial engineering), Park Jun-ha (industrial engineering), Lee Dong-geon (industrial engineering), Kim Young-chan (integrative systems engineering), and Lee Chang-hoon (integrative systems engineering). Integrative Systems Engineering Professor Min Hyeun Jeong directed the students, who were provided with technical support from Cobosys, a robotic and automation solutions company. In the course of designing the barista robot, the Ajou University and Nanyang Technological University students held weekly online progress meetings on their research of hand drip coffee recipes used by expert baristas, their development of algorithms (water amounts, spiral drip control, etc.) for application of the recipes, and use of 3D cameras and deep learning for object recognition. The barista robot created through the project is able to locate the hand drip set used in coffee making through object recognition and the use of six-axis robot arms with grippers in executing sophisticated movements. The robot intelligently responds to any accident factors in operation to make coffee of a consistently high quality, which it then places in a serving area. A major achievement of the project is the use of computer vision technology in hand dripping automation, an example to be followed in future development of autonomous barista robots. Industrial engineering student Park Yong-joon, one of the participating Ajou University students, commented, “The project was memorable because it had me working with many others, attending meetings in English, and working with robot arms and AI vision technology, all of which were new experiences for me.” He added, “The lessons I learned though this five-month project will help me with choosing my career path.” Nanyang Technological University is an emerging university in Singapore, a tech education powerhouse that has been referred to as “the MIT of Asia,” having ranked 26th in the world in the 2024 QS World University Rankings and first in the 2023 THE Emerging Economies University Rankings.The project was made possible through the International Industry-Academia-Research Cooperation-based Education Model Development/Operation Support Project of the LINC 3.0 Project in execution by Ajou University. In the development of global talent, Ajou University jointly develops and uses learning materials and curricula with the faculty of foreign universities, gives students opportunity to gain experience at foreign universities and companies, and maintains an international network of industry-academia-research collaborators to plan and execute joint education projects. President Choi Kee-choo visited a number of universities in the Western US for meetings on cooperation in education and research. He was accompanied by Kang Shin Goo, Chief of the Office of International Affairs and other members of Ajou University.From January 4 to 19, the delegation visited the University of California, the University of Southern California, the University of California, Irvine, and three other universities. Meeting with university officials, the delegation outlined the various global programs and research projects Ajou University is involved in to explore avenues of cooperation.A particular emphasis made during those meetings was on how the US universities might partner up with Ajou University in research as part of the LAMP (Learning and Academic research institution for master’s and PhD students, and Postdocs) Project of the Korean Ministry of Education. Begun last year, the LAMP Project supports innovative joint research in the basic sciences. The eight participating universities, including Ajou University, pursue joint innovative research that is theme-based and not restricted by subject or major. A budget of KRW 14.8 billion over the next 5 years has been set for the project.At the University of Southern California, the delegation met with officials from the Mann School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and discussed the possibility of creating research internship opportunities and summer/winter school programs for students over summer/winter breaks. At the University of California, the delegation visited the UCLA Center for Korean Studies and Dr. Dennis Hong’s Robotics and Mechanisms Laboratory and engaged in discussions on student exchanges and research cooperation. At the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the delegation held exchanges over research cooperation opportunities in energy and semiconductors, while at the University of California, San Diego, student exchange programs and dual degree programs were discussed. While at this last stop, the delegation met with Ajou University students there on a student exchange program: Han Yeon-seo (mathematics), Cho Min-jun (electrical and computer engineering), and Lee Hee-jae (French literature), and spent time talking with them about their experiences. At the University of California, Riverside, an MOU was signed for an alliance between its Winston Chung Global Energy Center and Ajou University’s Energy Systems Project Group, formed and operated for the Korean government’s BK21 Project. At the University of California, Irvine, discussions were held on such topics as research and education exchanges, student exchange programs, and dual degree programs. On the evening of the 4th the delegation had dinner with Ajou University alumni living and working in Los Angeles and other parts of the Western US. The seven Ajou University graduates, among them Shim Jae-gwang, an electrical and computer engineering graduate of 1987, are members of the Los Angeles branch of the Ajou University Alumni Association and are today active in engineering, apparel, real estate, and more. At the dinner, Ajou President Choi Kee-choo informed the alumni on the progress and vision of their alma mater, and discussed in depth plans for expanding the foreign branches of the Ajou University Alumni Association. On their itinerary, President Choi and his entourage made a stop at CES 2024 held in Las Vegas, where student and faculty entrepreneurs from Ajou University had their breakthrough offerings on show. On the 9th, President Choi attended a conference on the fostering of startups by Ajou University and Suwon City alongside Suwon Mayor Lee Jae-Joon and other Suwon City officials. The conference was a gathering of students interested in startups and startup CEOs for discussions on how the university and local community can work together to support startup entrepreneurs.
