2015 Year-End Party for the Ajou CEO Forum is held2015-12-03The 2015 Year-End Party for the Ajou CEO Forum was held on December 2nd at Novetel Ambassador Seoul Gangnam, with about 100 Ajou University alumni and their families in attendance. President Dong Yeon Kim and Vice President for Planning Jung Seob Lee represented the University at the Party.The Ajou CEO Forum was launched in 2009 and has CEOs and corporate executives, lawyers, accountants, professors, and other professionals as its members. It currently has about 130 members from the entrance classes of 1973 to 2005, who hold monthly breakfast meetings for studying and exchanges.One of the highlights of the day's event was the 'Auction for Sharing,' in which articles donated by Forum members – from artwork painted by members themselves to airplane tickets and hotel vouchers – were put on auction, with 17 articles being sold off. The Dinner Coupon with President Dong Yeon Kim was sold at 1.1 million won, the second-highest price. All the proceeds from the auction will be delivered to the University students as scholarship funds through the General Alumni Association.President Kim expressed his sincere gratitude to Chairman Tae Heon Kang and other members of the Forum for arranging such a meaningful event for their juniors. < A scene from the 'Auction for Sharing,' which proved very popular at the day's party. >< The Dinner Coupon with President Dong Yeon Kim is auctioned off at 1.1 million won, the second-highest price. >

Ajou's Creative University Job Center is dedicated2015-12-03The opening ceremony of the Creative University Job Center was held on the afternoon of December 3rd in the Video Conference Room of Ajou University's Yulgok Hall. After the ceremony, participants moved to the Center in the new Student Council Building for a tape-cutting event.The ceremony was attended by Ajou's President Dong Yeon Kim, Gyeonggi Branch Head Yeong Soo Kim of the Central Employment and Labor Office, and Director Jai Hyoung Cho of the Creative University Job Center in addition to other related officials.The Creative University Job Center Project, which is carried out by the Ministry of Employment and Labor, aims to help jobseekers easily access services related to finding jobs and starting businesses on the campus. Sixteen universities, including Ajou, were selected for the Project in October. They will receive an annual average of 500 million won, and the project period spans five years, with an evaluation after the first two years to decide whether the financial support will be continued. In his congratulatory speech at the opening ceremony, President Kim said, "Youth employment is not in a favorable condition, but this Center will do its utmost to help students and other young people in the community find jobs and start their own businesses."

Ajou's Professor Hye Young Jang is appointed to the Editorial Board of The Chemistry Select, a chemistry journal2015-12-03Ajou University's Professor Hye Young Jang (Department of Energy System Research, Department of Chemistry) was appointed to the Editorial Board of The Chemistry Select, a new chemistry journal published by Wiley.As a member of the Editorial Board, Professor Jang will be involved in the evaluation and publication of papers that appear in the journal. Wiley publishes journals covering various fields, including science, engineering, and medicine, and in particular, it has a number of chemistry journals with a high Impact Factor.The Chemistry Select deals with a wide range of research topics in chemistry, and its first issue will come out in December 2015.

Ajou's Shi Won Kim wins the '2015 Republic of Korea Talent Award'2015-12-01Ajou University's Shi Won Kim (Freshman, Department of Information and Computer Engineering under the College of Information Technology, pictured above) won the '2015 Republic of Korea Talent Award.'The award ceremony was held at 10 a.m. on November 27th at the Sejong Hall of the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts. The ceremony was hosted by the Ministry of Education and organized by the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity (KOFAC), and a total of 100 people were selected in the divisions of High School Students, University Students, and Other Young Adults as award-winners who received the Award of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Education, along with prize money of 3 million won and additional prizes.They were first recommended as candidates by municipal and provincial governments and central government organizations. They then went through document reviews and in-depth interviews by the Central Evaluation Committee before being officially selected as the winners.Shi Won Kim demonstrated outstanding enthusiasm and accomplishments in the field of IT convergence technology. While attending Dong In High School, he released an application (Smart School Library) in the Google Play store that enables people to search publications in the libraries of elementary, middle, and high schools throughout the nation. He also won the Grand Prize in the Happy Science and Technology Contest with his Go Bus solution (a Wi-Fi based application that allows the mobility handicapped to push alarm buttons in the bus or let bus drivers know that they want to get off at their destinations). He also developed a kidnapping-prevention software at this year's Convergence Software Hackathon that earned him the Excellent Award in the Social Problem Solution Division.Kim hopes to develop IT solutions that can contribute to society and said, "It is such an honor to receive this award. I believe that they expect me to become a talent of the Republic of Korea not only in the results, but in the process of my work and actions. I will bear that in mind and continue to work hard."

A team led by Ajou's Professor Kyo Beum Lee wins the ‘2015 Best Paper Award of JPE’2015-12-01A team led by Ajou University's Professor Kyo Beum Lee (Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering) won the ‘2015 Best Paper Award’ from The Journal of Power Electronics (JPE), a publication listed on the Science Citation Index.The ‘Best Paper Award of JPE’ winner was selected from among some 170 papers that were published in JPE from September 2014 to July 2015 based on the recommendations and voting of its Editorial Board members.The award-winning paper was published in the January edition of JPE and entitled "Current Sensorless MPPT Control Method for Dual-Mode PV Module-Type Interleaved Flyback Inverters." June Hee Lee, a student in his doctoral course at Ajou, and Doctor June Seok Lee, who graduated in August and now works at the Korea Railroad Research Institute, participated as co-authors and Professor Lee worked as the corresponding author. The paper provides information that is essential for the research and development of micro inverters based on sunlight modules.Regarding the prestigious accolade, June Hee Lee said, "I am glad to win the award," adding, "I would like to thank Professor Kyo Beum Lee for his extensive guidance in writing the great paper, and I will continue to try to produce even better papers."

Ajou's President Dong Yeon Kim organizes the monthly breakfast meeting of the Giwoo Society2015-11-30Ajou University's President Dong Yeon Kim participated in the monthly breakfast meeting of the Giwoo Society, which was held on November 27th. The meeting started at 7:20 a.m. in the Gyeonggi Small and Medium Business Support Center.The Giwoo Society has about 200 members including public organizations, main institutions including Ajou, and corporations based in Gyeonggi-do. It was established to contribute to the development of Gyeonggi-do by sharing public opinions, making policy suggestions, and conducting community services, etc.The program of the Society's regular meeting, which is held over breakfast, includes policy briefing from the Gyeonggi-do government and special lectures. The Giwoo Society is divided into 12 teams and individual teams take turns in organizing the monthly breakfast meeting. Team 11, where President Kim belongs, prepared and hosted the meeting for November.As the leader of Team 11, President Kim greeted participants of the meeting and introduced his team members.

Ajou's Professor Tae Won Park wins 'Dynamics and Control Academic Award' from the Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers2015-11-30Ajou University's Professor Tae Won Park (Department of Mechanical Engineering) won the 'Dynamics and Control Academic Award' from the Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers (KSME). The award was presented during the Special Academic Conference marking the 70th anniversary of KSME, which was held from November 10th to the 14th at the International Convention Center in Jeju.Professor Park received the Award in recognition of his accomplishments in the field of dynamics and control. He has steadily conducted research in railroads and automobiles, etc. for many years.Established in 1945, KSME has led academic and technological development in the field of mechanical engineering. It has about 20,000 members and 8 branches throughout the nation. KSME has 13 divisions related to mechanical engineering - Materials and Fracture, Computer-aided Engineering (CAE) and applied mechanics, Dynamics and Control, Production and Design Engineering, Thermal Engineering, Fluid Engineering, Energy and Power Engineering, Reliability Engineering, Bio Engineering, Micro·Nano Engineering, Plants, IT Convergence, and Education.

Ajou Workshop of Professors with Administrative Positions is held for the 2015 Academic Year-Fall Semester2015-11-30On November 27th in the Auditorium of Dasan Hall, Ajou University's Workshop of Professors with Administrative Positions was held for the 2015 Academic Year-Fall Semester, with about 80 professors in attendance. About 20 team leaders and senior managers from relevant divisions also joined them.The Workshop began with greetings from President Dong Yeon Kim, followed by a presentation about the results of university evaluation and future directions, and a To-Do List regarding Ajou's development strategy by Vice President for Planning, and a presentation about the Creative Activity Semester and the Comprehensive Professor Evaluation by Vice President for Academic Affairs. There were Q&A sessions at the end of each presentation to share various ideas.In his greetings, President Kim stressed, "The University cannot develop without active communication," adding, "At Ajou, smooth communication is not necessarily difficult because we have a common goal, which is the development of the University. Ajou's Project Support Team is selected as the 'Department of the Month'2015-11-30Ajou University’s Project Support Team was selected as the ‘Department of the Month’ and received gifts and words of encouragement from President Dong Yeon Kim on November 30th in the President's Office.Project Support Team was launched in September and consists of Team Leader Cheol Kyun Park, Assistant Manager Joo Yong Kim, and Ji Eun Park. The Team has been working hard to win the Project for Developing R&D Platforms Specialized in Medicine, Health, and IT, and Medical Equipment Technology, which is organized by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. In November alone, the Team's members worked over 100 hours of overtime during weekdays and weekends due to the Project and other tasks.The Project was announced on September 22nd and received project plan submissions until November 18th, and there will be presentations by the applicants on December 2nd. Preparation for the Project is being led by Professor Ye Yeon Won (Department of Orthopedics), and involves the Project Support Team and the College of Information Technology.

“Sherlock Holmes” musical is successfully staged at Ajou with local residents in attendance2015-11-26The musical "Sherlock Holmes – The Secret of the Anderson Family" was successfully staged at Ajou University on November 25th with about 3,500 people in attendance, including Ajou people and local residents.The performance was part of the Ajou Cultural Fest, which is held every year in November and has staged various types of shows, including pop and classical music concerts. The “Sherlock Holmes” musical is based on the well-known detective novel with the same title. It is considered to be a quality production and have popular appeal, winning several awards after the novel was first adapted to musical form in 2011.About 1,000 local residents from Wooman-dong, Woncheon-dong, and Gwanggyo enjoyed the musical, along with students, professors, and staff members from the University.President Eui Seop Shin of Ajou’s Student Council said, "This is the last major event I have prepared this year as the leader of the Student Council. My term is approaching its end, and I am thankful that so many people have come to fill this theater."President Dong Yeon Kim briefly introduced the novel Sherlock Holmes written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and asked that the audience enjoy the performance. He said to the invited residents, "Ajou University has a nationwide reputation and strength in international exchanges, but I believe its foundation will be weak if Ajou fails to take root in the community and be loved by the residents, no matter how hard we work.
