2015-10-06

The first Book Club meeting led by Ajou's President was held on October 6th in the University Library, and the participants read and discussed Gulliver's Travels authored by Jonathan Swift.

The President's Book Club, which began at noon, was attended by President Dong Yeon Kim and thirteen students. It was launched with the initiative of President Kim in the fall semester of this year.

President Kim said, "I began the Book Club to meet and talk with students and encourage them to read many books," adding, "I hope that reading will help you find what you want to do and look at things from totally different perspectives."

Regarding the reason for selecting Gulliver's Travels as the first book for discussion, he said, "I considered 'fun' so that you can enjoy reading," adding, "I also thought that the book could provide insights and critical views of social issues."

Students read Gulliver's Travels which was given to them before coming to the day's event. They presented their respective thoughts of the book and discussed questions regarding classics and reading with the President.

The President's Book Club is a monthly event where participants get together and have discussions. The book selected for the next month is David And Goliath. Students wishing to participate in the meeting can apply on the University website.

On October 6th, Ajou University's soccer team invited about thirty students from Yuljeon Middle School to a one-day soccer class.

The event is part of the University's social contribution activities and the invited students included players of Yuljeon's soccer team and other students. It began with a lecture that was given by Head Coach Seok Ju Ha of Ajou's soccer team in its accommodation, followed by a soccer clinic and a practice match with players of the University soccer team on the playground.

In his lecture, Coach Ha stressed the importance of physical strength by saying, "To be successful in soccer and studying, you should stay physically fit," and he asked the students to be humble at all times saying, "There are so many people who are good in each and every field."

During the soccer clinic, Ajou's players corrected postures and movements of Yuljeon's students on an individual basis, and they chose to do only one-touch passes during the practice match.

Coach Ha stated, "It was meaningful time for the middle school students and Ajou's players. I will continue to find ways to communicate with the local community."
